eMBOLIZATION

QualihealtH and Hospital St. Louis have perfected through several years their partnership to present a pioneer method to overcome Uterine Fibroids, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostate Cancer.

UTERINE FIBROIDS:
Due to our efforts, over 1100 patients underwent Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). Of those, over 800 were treated as outpatient, and discharged from the hospital 4 to 8 hours after the procedure. At the moment, all of our patients are discharged 4 to 8 hours after the embolization.
 
Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas or myomas) are the most common benign tumor in women and may cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure related symptoms such as urinary incontinence, urinary frequency and pressure over the bladder. They may be a cause of infertility or cause pain during sexual intercourse.

RESULTS:
​The blockage of the tiny vessels which supply blood to the fibroids leads to starvation of the fibroids and cause their death and sequential shrink. At 6 months, the reduction of volume of the fibroids will be 20 – 80 % and the overall uterine volume reduction will be 20 – 50%. However the volume reduction will continue up to 5 years. At this time, the successfully treated fibroids will be calcified, that means they will not grow. More important than the percentage of reduction of the fibroid and uterus is the rate of ischemia of fibroid, that is the percentage of reduction of the blood flow that should be greater than 90% for a good prognosis. In this case it means that the fibroids will not grow again.
Uterine fibroid embolization reduces bleeding, urinary frequency and abdominal enlargement in over 90% of women who undergo the procedure.
Similarly, the quality of life will improve after embolization.
Pregnancy is possible after embolization: 57 patients, who could not get pregnant, got pregnancy, 44 of them were able to have already their children without any complication.
Uterine Fibroids Embolization (UFE) is considered successful if there is clinical improvement and fibroid ischemia over 90%. Our Team success rate performing UFE is over 90%.
None of our patients who got pregnancy after embolization could get a successful pregnancy before embolization.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
 
QualihealtH is presenting an innovator procedure to help patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). It is called Prostatic Arterial Embolization (PAE) and it has been shown to be safe and effective inducing prostatic volume reduction in patients suffering from BPH.
 
The procedure is minimally invasive (without any incision and leaving no scar) and is performed under local anesthesia, without pain or other symptoms, with short hospitalization, immediate improvement and short recovery. Hospitalization only lasts a few hours and almost all patients go home after dinner, if the blood pressure is normal, even if they live several hundred kilometers away from Lisbon. In this period, there will be a permanent contact with the medical team to assess complaints or clarify any doubts.
 
The excellence of the procedure is due to a multidisciplinary team led by Professor Tiago Bilhim, renowned physician, pioneer in this medical field. Medical teams are coming all over the world to learn from Dr. Bilhim and his Team about this procedure.
  
Embolization is a very safe technique, with a very large success rate and unlike the prostatectomy, in which some patients are left with sexual dysfunction, sexual function is not affected in Embolization. None of the 1000 treated patients had sexual function affected. Actually, the sexual performance improved in about a third of the treated patients and in the remaining persisted as it was.


PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate Cancer- New Treatment - Prostatic Artery Chemoembolization

Having started uterine fibroid embolization on 2004 and, five years later, after having treated over 1000 patients with excellent results and having knowledge of the common major complications after surgery of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, we thought to start embolization of the prostatic arteries for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

Due to the outstanding results achieved with the above mentioned diseases, the next step was to implement Arterial Embolization in Prostatic Cancer Treatment.
Prostatic Artery Chemoembolization is a good treatment for those who don’t want other treatment or to stay waiting. The treatment is made under local anaesthesia, and a catheter is placed percutaneously under X-rays control, in the prostatic arteries. Following that, a cytostatic (cancer medication) is placed in the prostatic arteries. The procedure is finished by the embolization of those arteries by an embolic agent. Thus, the cytostatic medication will continue its action in the prostatic cancer.

Advantages of Chemoembolization

• Minimally invasive procedure; performed under local anesthesia; without pain (or only light pain); without blood loss; no need for blood transfusion; an outpatient procedure; only a few hours of hospitalization; no need for bladder catheter; recover time of one day; no urinary incontinence; no sexual dysfunction.

Chemoembolization is different from other alternative treatments to Prostatic Cancer due to its efficacy and efficiency, it’s faster, it’s painless, it’s non-invasive and it has a fast recovery.
Our Interventional Radiology Staff, after making successful embolization with uterine fibroids and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, is performing embolization in Prostatic Cancer.
